The Catholic parish in which I grew up was constructed in the early to mid 1970's. It very much bears the stamp of its era: The architecture is simple, ornaments are sparse, and somebody forgot to install a proper pipe organ.
What someone did remember to do, however, was include a single wisp of whimsy in the narrow, blocky stained glass windows: There's an Apollo capsule floating in a field of stars on the back wall of the church.
It's a small glimpse into the overwhelming sweep of the American space program at its apex. It influenced children, inspired teachers, and worked its way into an otherwise drab Ohio church.
Nowadays, you'd have to know where to look for such influence from NASA-- but it's there nonetheless.
