Virginia is for Dog Lovers

There is more to do with your dog in Virginia than you can shake a stick at. One look at the official website  and your head will be spinning with possibilities for dog-friendly adventure. www.virginia.org

From April through October, you and Fido can enjoy happy hour at the Hotel Monaco Alexandria. Every Tuesday and Thursday, from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m., dogs hold court in the courtyard where treats and water are made available for canines and libations are offered to their pet guardians.

The Shenandoah Valley region is home to Lexington Valley Vineyard where your pooch is welcome to hang out with you as you sample the region's finest wines. The Wines & Wags days are designated to every second Friday of the month, May through October.

Accommodations for you and your furry best friend are easy to come by. The difficulty is in choosing which property to experience. 500 to be exact. Here are a few of my favorites:

Fox Hill Bed & Breakfast and Cottage Suites
Fairfield
Rate range:  $149 - $179 (seasonal specials and packages)
Pet Fee:  $15/night/dog

38 acres of walking trails, mountain views and a stream make for a quiet and relaxing retreat. Dogs are welcomed with treats and there are outdoor washing stations with towels and shampoo.

1926 C&O Caboose
Shenandoah Valley
Rate: $150
Pet fee: $10 per night

The caboose is a restored 'woody' caboose, which was retired from the C&O railroad in the late 1970's after more than 60 years of service as the quarters for train crews in the coalfields of West Virginia. It has undergone extensive renovation and now is a unique vacation rental near the beautiful Natural Bridge and the historic valley town of Lexington.

Garden and Sea Inn
New Church
Rate: $95-$225
Pet Fee: None

One of the most beautiful B&Bs on the friendly Eastern Shore. Rooms with private baths. 5 acres to walk and play with Fido with fenced yard, dog treats and towels.

Oak Grove Plantation B&B
Cluster Springs
Room rate: $90-$140
Pet Fee: $25 per visit for up to two dogs

400 acres to walk with your dogs and if you grow tired from hiking and eating a gourmet breakfast, the Oak Grove Plantation B&B offers a doggie day hike which includes a 2-hour excursion, water, treat and digital photos all for $35. Pet sitting is also available should you take in an excursion that does not allow Fido. Inquire regarding fee.
