During the 2008 presidential campaign, Barack Obama's choice for Vice President of the United States, Joe Biden, was caught in one of his famous off the record "foot-in-mouth" moments when he said the following:
Well Joe, I don't know about your "four or five" scenarios, but in Obama's first 100 days as President, there have been two very serious "tests" from nations that have been labeled as members of "the Axis of Evil."
In his 2002 State of the Union address, President Bush identified three nations as being a part of a group of rogue nations - Iraq, Iran and North Korea. These nations were so labeled due to their support of terrorism and their desire to develop weapons of mass destruction, along with their stated hostilities toward America and the Free World.
Sadly, in these early
"tests" of the new President, it would appear that Mr. Obama is failing.
One of the first tests came from the nation of North Korea, a country that had made so much progress under the Bush Administration that he had lifted trade sanctions in 2008, and removed them from the blacklist of terrorist supporting nations - a move that then Senator Biden and Senator Obama supported. Still, in an act of international defiance, the Pyongyang regime launched a missile that was intended to prove to the world that they were capable of hitting any target, anywhere in the world, while expelling the United Nations' nuclear inspectors. They have also announced their intentions to restore nuclear plants.
How did the Obama administration respond to these actions? After working with the United Nations Security Council for a week, he managed a pretty weak "condemnation" of the action, instead of obtaining the resolution that was preferred by the United States and Japan. So, not only did his administration fail to deal with North Korea, but thanks to the combined weaknesses of Obama and Ambassador Rice, North Korea barely managed a "slap of wrist."
Next on the list of "tests" comes another member of the Axis of Evil, the nation of Iran. Besides their obvious ambitions to develop nuclear weapons designed to reach most of Europe and Iran's arch enemy Israel, Iran has begun to display the same behavior we witnessed from them under the administration of another weak Democrat President, Jimmy Carter.
In a move reminiscent of the Iranian hostage crisis, which lasted 444 days and ended Carter's chances of re-election, Iran has jailed an American citizen for "spying" and has thumbed their nose at the United States. Roxana Saberi, a journalist from North Dakota, was tried and convicted without proper due process and was sentenced to eight years in prison. When notified of this result, Obama stated he was "deeply disappointed," while he continued with his plans to meet with President Ahmadinejad without preconditions.
From these two examples, the Obama administration has clearly demonstrated a lack of understanding about the "war on terror" - oops, I mean “Overseas Contingency Operations." He arbitrarily closes the Guantanamo Bay detention camp without a plan for processing the prisoners kept there. He releases TOP SECRET memos that will equip enemies of the United States with training material for their recruits, and will result in court cases against the Bush Administration, along with millions of dollars in lawsuits funded by the federal government. And he ties the hands of our military and intelligence agencies by allowing radical left-wing agents like the American Civil Liberties Union to threaten legal action against them, along with rule changes that have turned the war into a "police action" where we give terrorists Constitutional protections that only U.S. citizens should enjoy.
Joe Biden thought he was being insightful when he gave his opinion on how Obama would be tested by foreign powers and he tried to assure Americans that President Obama would measure up to the tests - but sadly, it appears that he has failed.
Joe Biden was right.... almost.
