Recall on several Nutro brands of puppy foods
Nutro® has recalled several types of puppy foods.

Nutro® has announced a new recall on several varieties of puppy foods.

Plastic found in dry dog and cat food products

Small pieces of melted plastic were found in several varieties of Nutro® brand dry dog and cat food products. Apparently, the plastic was introduced into the foods through the accidental introduction of a worker's plastic hat into the production process while the foods were being manufactured. The hat was, according to Nutro®, a "bump" cap, which is a protective head covering similar to a hard hat.

Several varieties of puppy food distributed to PetSmart® and Petco® stores

While Nutro® was successful in identifying and removing most of the affected foods before they reached the distribution chain, two brands of puppy foods believed to possibly contain small pieces of plastic were distributed to PetSmart® and Petco® stores in the following states:

  • Arizona
  • California
  • Colorado
  • Hawaii
  • New Mexico
  • Nevada
  • Texas
  • Utah

Recalled brands of Nutro® dog food

Both of the recalled foods are manufactured for the feeding of puppies. The recalled products include:

  • Nutro® Ultra™ Puppy Food for Dogs in 4.5 lbs bags
  • Nutro® Ultra™ Puppy Food for Dogs in 30 lbs bags
  • Nutro® Natural Choice® Chicken Meal, Rice and Oatmeal Formula Small Bites Puppy in 5 lbs bags

All recalled foods carry the "best by" date 09/10/10 and the following UPC codes:

  • 79105 51313
  • 79105 23050
  • 79105 51315

Consumers should return recalled products

Pet owners feeding these diets should carefully check the packaging to determine whether their product has been recalled. Recalled products can be returned to the retailer for a full refund or exchange, according to Nutro®
