The state of Georgia will now have its first varsity college wrestling program.

Shorter College will be adding wrestling to its roster of intercollegiate sports, beginning in fall 2010.

Wrestling, along with men's and women's lacrosse, will be added next year as part of the Rome, Georgia-based school's move from college to university status.

"We are very pleased about adding wrestling as our 21st overall varsity sports program," said Bill Peterson, Shorter's athletic director. "It is also a great honor to initiate the only four-year varsity wrestling program in the state of Georgia. We know that there is a great deal of enthusiasm about wrestling in Georgia, and we are very proud to be a part of that excitement."

Shorter's wrestling program is slated to compete in the Mid-South Conference along with current league members Campbellsville University, Cumberland University (Tenn.), the University of the Cumberlands (Ky.), Lindsey Wilson College and West Virginia Tech.

The search for a head coach will begin immediately.

Shorter College is a four-year institution of higher education. Originally founded as a women's school in 1873, Shorter welcomed men in the 1950s. Wrestling will the school's 21st varsity sport. Existing sports teams at Shorter compete in the NAIA (National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics) as the Hawks.

Just last month, Wayland Baptist became the first college in the state of Texas to create varsity wrestling programs for men and women.
