Marijuana 101: Is Seattle Hempfest the world's largest marajuana decriminalization gathering?

The third weekend in August is always the weekend of Seattle's annual Hempfest and the 2009 crowd was well over 100,000, many of whom were far from your average stoner. Last year's Hempfest attracted over 300,000 people, making it the largest pro-marijuana gathering in the world.
Founded in 1991 as the Washington Hemp Expo and attended by about 500 self-described "stoners," the Seattle Hempfest has become the world's largest annual gathering in support of decriminalizing marijuana.
Although Hempfest still includes many music stages and vendors, arrests for smoking marijuana do not happen in this peaceful but crowded setting where many celebrities have come to voice their opinions. Among them have been travel expert Rick Steeves (who is outspoken regarding the decriminalization of marijuana), actor Woody Harrelson and former Seattle major Norm Stamper.
Hempfest again proves that "we the people" need to take control of our government and decriminalize this natural substance. Smoking marijuana on a daily basis is certainly not something a young person should aspire to, but marijuana can be used as a responsible medical treatment. Recreationally, it is also far less harmful than alcohol, and the potential for tax revenue are huge.
So, if you're ever in the Seattle area on the third weekend in August and like large crowds, be sure to check out our annual Hempfest. I know my sons are doing that. I'm not so fond of large crowds and loud music.
