Sonia Sotomayor, Barack Obama, Supreme Court, nominee, lesbian, gay
Obama and Sotomayor, a picture of diversity.

Questions have been surfacing about Supreme Court nominee Sonia Sotomayor, especially her strange pattern of relationships with men  In his  column Michael Wolff asked the delicate question "is Sonia Sotomayor gay?"  This query is currently unanswered but popping up in many people's minds.   There is some gossip about the vagueness of her relationship, or lack thereof.  The press touted the fact that she brought her mother to the announcement of her appointment, but there was no sign of a significant other.

What is known is that she married her high school sweetheart Kevin Edward Noonan in 1976 following her graduation from Princeton.  The couple was divorced in 1983, and they have no children.  Noonan is a biologist and a patent lawyer.  The public perspective that has been presented includes a lot of pictures with nieces and nephew and a present relationship with someone continently absent from the public eye and unnamed.

Does all this matter?   Not really.  We may already have a gay Supreme Court judge who has never come out, but he is a male.  Full disclosure here would probably kill Sotomayor's nomination when it should make no difference.  However, "people will talk" and usually not in ways that support diversity.

We know that Sotomayor is an excellent jurist of Hispanic descent and a woman.  These characteristics are very much needed in the mix of diversity required to create a just government where all people are fairly represented.  Still, I think that if Sotomayor came out as a lesbian, it would probably be the straw that broke that camel's back.

Regardless of any preferences she has, let us be hopeful that she will be considered as a judge rather than anything else.   And may we all be extremely tolerant and accepting of the many diverse lifestyles that make the United States a melting pot unique in the annals of human culture.
