Will he call her a girl in twenty years?
Barack Obama again did his best to show us that he is a "regular guy" on his latest trip to Green Bay. During that visit, which cost taxpayers millions of dollars we don't have, he did his usual smoke and mirrors cover up along with some Mr. Nice Guy song and dance.
Obama went to Green Bay to be among the people for a town hall type meeting about health care. The PR highlight was not the speech, but when John Corpus told Obama that he had his daughter Kennedy with him. Corpus went on to say that she had skipped school for the event.
The now famous video of that interaction is below. It was a very personable thing for Obama to do, but what everyone missed was his slip of the tongue a few minutes later when he asked for another question saying,
"Okay, it's a girl's turn. I see a lady right there."
Obama was not talking about Corpus' daughter or his own children. He was referring to a grown woman in the audience using what would be considered a derogatory slur at best. Would he have said, "Okay, it's a boy's turn," and then called on a man? How about an African-American man?
When Obama gets comfortable, hints of the real Barack slip out. He's a politician, and just like any other, he is beholden to those truly in power (big business and particularly the military industrial complex) to keep him in power and make him a very rich man (not boy). He needs to put up the personable, regular guy front while he continues to support war and the corporate structure that put him in power. So, people continue to believe his message of change while he does just what almost every other politician has done – bleed the taxpayers dry while lining his pockets and fostering his ability to make even more money in the future.
I have no doubt that Obama is a good and honorable man, but he has chosen to be a politician, and change cannot occur within our current system. It's already bankrupt as politicians continue to give more of our money to war and corporate bailouts.
May we all soon wake up to the reality that we are living on an abundant planet if we can only shift from weaponry to livingry. And may people choose to really make a difference by giving selflessly of themselves within that unique context.
