The Greenheart Shop partners with Local First Chicago to host a "Green Friday" to encourage shoppers to go "green" on the day-after-Thanksgiving Black Friday shopping binge and make their own gifts this year.  On Friday, November 28, from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m., Greenheart offers free crafting workshops, such as knitting, re-fashioning old sweaters into mittens and stockings, re-styling old t-shirts, and jewelry making.  Snacks and drinks will be provided.

Green Friday is a close cousin of the Abdusters-led "Buy Nothing Day." The object of Green Friday is to encourage all to make their own gifts instead of buying into the consumerism frenzy.  But if you must shop til you drop on the first day of the Christmas shopping season, at least make conscious choices and buy fair trade or locally-produced gifts.

The Greenheart Shop, located at 746 N. LaSalle, is Chicago's premier eco-fair trade, non-profit shop that carries both fair trade and eco-friendly products. They carry everything from artisanal goods and jewelry to fair trade coffee and chocolate.  Their website says, "Greenheart believes consumers have the power to affect positive World change by supporting sustainable and fair business practices in their purchasing choices."  Greenheart also hosts a monthly Green Book Club and Green Spa Night.

For more info: visit the Greenheart Shop website or the Adbusters site for more info on Buy Nothing Day.
