Does anyone know what's going on with Beanie Wells' right foot?
At 7:30 PM last night, SI.com posted an article announcing that Ohio State running back Beanie Wells was "on target to play vs. USC" after recovering from a right foot injury sustained in the first game of the season.
A mere 15 hours later, SI.com released a follow-up story stating that Wells was now listed as doubtful for the USC game.
So what happened in that half a day to keep Wells out of the biggest game of the season?
After only taking part in 20% of the drills during practice on Wednesday and only going 75% in those drills, Wells was so sore he couldn't participate in Thursday's practice. Coach Jim Tressel, who initially thought Wells would play on Saturday, was hoping for an improvement in Wells' condition. But that turned out to be overly optimistic.
So now the big question is, can Ohio State, playing without their star running back, hang with USC?
And the slightly smaller question is - What exactly is wrong with Wells' foot? So far, there are no concrete reports out there detailing what the injury actually is. We know what it isn't. The foot isn't broken and Beanie doesn't have turf toe.
What's left? Conjunctivitis?
