Before kickoffs, Jayhawk student football fans chant, "Rip his f-ing head off" - a line from Adam Sandler's 1998 comedy The Waterboy.
Due to legitimate concerns over the presence of children at football games and television cameras picking up the chant, the editors at the University Daily Kansan have organized the latest effort to squash the chant.
A video of Kansas football coach Mark Mangino asking football fans to refrain from making the obscene chant has been sent out to the students and will be displayed on the big screen before Saturday's game against Colorado.
While the university's effort is commendable as it is not appropriate for children to listen to students dropping f-bombs at football games, the irony in Coach Mangino telling Kansas fans to clean up their acts cannot be overlooked.
First off, there's the fact that only a few weeks previous, Jayhawk fans were complaining about the behavior of opposing team aficionados. After Kansas' game against South Florida in mid-September, one which the Jayhawks lost 37-34, the University Daily Kansan, the very same paper spearheading the latest campaign, ran a story on how poorly the Kansas fans were treated by USF supporters.
Not only were fans disappointed by the 37-34 loss, but they also thought some South Florida fans were rude and disrespectful.
And then there's the fact that Mangino is the face of this anti-cursing campaign. A coach known for cursing on the sidelines is telling students to stop cursing in the stands. Here, have a listen to Mangino chewing out wide receiver Raimond Pendleton after an excessive celebration penalty last season:
It'll be interesting to see if the initiative works and Jayhawk fans stop chanting the obscene line before kickoffs or if they ignore their school's advice because they're on the receiving end of the curses at other schools. And, in the end, there's really nothing Kansas can do to punish them for having foul mouths.
