"David Lang is a watercolorist, sculptor and photgrapher. His watercolors are primarily of barns, farms and remnants of past and almost forgotten ways. His recent sculpture is mostly kinetic. It is elegant, whimsical and often narrative. Much of his photography is done in Ireland where he maintains a studio as well."
In his Artist Statement, David describes his work:
"I am a watercolorist and I build sculpture. At first glance, the sculptural work seems complicated, yet reads with a great deal of elegant simplicity, grace and ease. It is also quite narrative; each tells a story. Most of the work is kinetic, activated by a motion sensor and the presence of the observer. The movements are slow and subtle, and often unexpected. The pieces themselves are sometimes both whimsical and serious, graceful and somewhat awkward. Everything in my work is understated and at the same time conspicuously complex. There is a balance between the machine and observer who becomes an active participant. Virtually all of the work has complex visual interactions and interferences taking place and yet everything does interact smoothly, if not by very small margins. I use miniature motors, hand made gears, levers, pulleys and almost any material that could heighten the visual sense of unlikelihood."
David's work is often on exhibit in the Boston area. Currently, you can see his work at the "Off the Wall Annual Members’ Juried Exhibition," and the "Community of Artists Annual Members’ Juried Exhibition," both at the Danforth Museum in Framingham, MA through August 2, 2009.
If you have an opportunity to see David Lang's work, especially his sculptures, do. They appear to be very simple and complex at the same time, and they also have a nice, subtle sense of humor. Viewers of all ages enjoy his work.
David's studio in Natick is open to the public whenever he is there working, or by appointment.
