Touring the magical Galapagos
If you’re looking for a truly exotic adventure, follow in the footsteps - or boat wake - of Charles Darwin and head for the Galapagos Islands. The Galapagos Islands are an archipelago of islands that are 600 miles off the coast of Ecuador.
The Galapagos Islands sit at the Equator line including six main islands 12 smaller islands and over 40 islets. Spanish pirates of yesterday named Galapagos "The Enchanted Islands” when they visited years ago and it won’t take you long to understand why.
A Galapagos Island cruise is really the best way to see the islands so consider the Ecuador Explorer and check out their website at www.ecuadorexplorer.com. At the site you will find information on a variety of boats, cruises and tours. Things haven't changed much either since Darwin first observed the turtles, birds, flora and fauna that inspired his “Origin of Species.”
The Galapagos Islands have been set aside as a "living museum," heavily protected by the Ecuadorian government. Hotels are of "varying standards" and not particularly fancy, the ships are a better choice offering air conditioning, Jacuzzis and local food.
Cruises are between three and seven days depending on your sense of adventure. And you can always visit the Galapagos Islands because the national park is open year round.
