Dear Barbara,
I have a 1999 Mazda 626 ES sedan and as I shift the automatic transmission from reverse to another gear I hear and feel a clunk. Also when I am driving less then twenty miles an hour and I let up on the gas there is also a clunk sound while it is shifting.
Thanks
Joe
Dear Joe,
Other than just coming out with it and letting you know that your tranny is fried I wish I had better news. The only thing that I can suggest for you to do is to make sure that you do have transmission fluid in your car. Once your transmission goes you are pretty much faced with investing in a new one or rebuilt one hence the popping that you are feeling. The popping and sometimes slipping is caused by the gears inside the transmission casing grinding up after years of wear and tear and possibly sometimes by abuse!
It is a pretty common problem with your make and model car unfortunately so please do not feel singled out, just get that transmission replaced or you will be left completely without any gears!
Sorry that I could not have told you that it was something simple and inexpensive.
