According to the Herbal Remedies Information site, to treat colds and sore throats, put 5-6 drops in water and gargle it before swallowing. And according to The Optimal Breathing Store site, some research is posted. A recommendation at the The Optimal Breathing Store is to: take one dose with every meal. But for chronic conditions: Take 2 doses with every meal until symptoms have disappeared for two days.
An article posted on the Optimal Breathing Store site notes that "Oregano oil was extensively tested at Georgetown University Medical Center. The oregano oil product, oregacillin, reduced the human flu virus 99.9% in 20 minutes from 10,000,000 to 5,000 infectious units per ml at 1% dilution. According to Optimal Breathing Store site, “Oregacillin is the only researched, tested, wild crafted (guaranteed below 5% thymol and 70% of the time it is below 1% thymol) oregano and spice extract for boosting immunity and supporting respiratory health.”
Oregano oil is used in Mexico to kill parasites in water such as giardia. It’s also used in various countries to treat intestinal pinworms and other similar intestinal parasites. Oregano oil is anti-inflammatory oil that’s used in a variety of countries to treat gum disease and teeth.
The Breathing Store site also notes that, “Research shows that spice extracts kills germs, including bacteria, molds, yeasts, and fungi. Oregacillin is completely edible and is made from natural spices and herbs, including proprietary P73 wild oregano blend. Oregacillin products are for anti-fungal, anti-viral, anti-bacterial, anti-parasitic and anti-spasmodic uses.”
Another herb mentioned at the Herbal Remedies information site that's helped stop viral invasion is Yarrow tincture. Directions on the site tell you to “place a few drops of the tincture inside the nose to get rid of the lurking germs, especially before going out into crowded places.”
The Herbal Remedies information site notes, “Yarrow is slightly sedative and 10 drops in a bit of water before bed is very relaxing.” Read the article on the site about how oils are used as anti-viral and anti-bacterial remedies for colds.
With oregano oil that you’re taking in the hope it will destroy bacteria or viruses, you should know that oregano oil does also destroy bacteria and well as cold viruses. Even monolaurin that attacks viruses will not destroy cold viruses (rhinoviruses). But oregano oil does destroy rhinoviruses, flu viruses, and intestinal parasites such as pinworms.
Also try it as a mouthwash to help prevent gum disease-causing anaerobic bacteria from turning a mild case of gingivitis into a worse type of gum disease. Use a dropper to insert two drops of oregano oil under your tongue.
Swish the oil around your gums before swallowing. Or put the two drops on a Q-tip, similar applicator, or your toothbrush. You can brush your teeth with two drops of oregano oil and then again with your toothpaste or baking soda and water.
If you rub oregano oil on a sore, arthritic spot on your skin, it can penetrate and ease the pain, according to some research mentioned in the article by Roger Baird titled, “Escape the Flu and Cold Season and Much More...” at the Herbal Remedies Information site. Baird’s article notes, “Daily doses (three drops three times a day) will help keep your immune system strong enough to fight off most cold and flu viruses.”
The article also mentions oregano oil as a treatment for herpes and hepatitis. But check out these claims to see where the research actually was performed and what the conclusions were to validate any uses mentioned online. See the information page for a variety of oils such as tea tree oil, neem oil, and their uses.

Also, See the “Oil of Wild Oregano” site that reports, Oil of Oregano’s, “chief chemical constituent, a phenol called Carvacrol – a very powerful antiseptic.”
What’s in oregano oil? According to the “Oil of Wild Oregano” site, “Oregano oil contains 3 other main classes of chemicals which act synergistically to provide the antibacterial, antifungal, antiviral, anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, analgesic, anti-venom and antiparasitic qualities of Oregano oil.”
You want to use oregano oil rather than get an extract of carvacrol because, according to the “Oil of Wild Oregano” site, “pure Carvacrol is only half as effective as pure Oregano oil in inhibiting fungal and bacterial growth.”
The “Oil of Wild Oregano” site also reports that, “by using oregano oil daily, you can significantly reduce your chances of being one of the 84 million cases of food poisoning that occur annually in North America.”
Besides being used as a remedy for cold and flu viruses and numerous bacteria-caused problems, oregano oil also treats commonly known virus-caused problems such as “shingles, herpes, and warts.” Also see the International Institute of Holistic Healing site's "Wild Oregano" article that mentions oregano oil as also being used in some cases to kill bacteria and viruses in sewage water.
