- Keep your nails hydrated by rubbing a small amount of petroleum jelly or olive oil onto nail beds and cuticles each night or whenever nails are dry.
- Wear gloves whenever cleaning or washing dishes to protect skin and nails from harsh chemicals. For an added benefit, apply moisturizer to hands before putting on the gloves.
- File your nails in one direction to prevent cracking and chips. Filing back and forth weakens nails.
- Massage your nails to increase blood flow, which stimulates growth.
- Avoid polish removers with acetone or formaldehyde as they are very drying to nails.
- Take 300 micrograms of the B vitamin biotin four to six times a day. Long ago, veterinarians discovered that biotin strengthened horses' hooves, which are made from keratin, the same substance in human nails.
- Drink a glass of milk to increase calcium and zinc intake.
- Do not cut cuticles or you risk infection. If necessary, push them back gently.
- Trim your toenails straight across to avoid ingrown toenails.
- Polish your nails with a clear coat for extra strength. If you want color, be sure to use a base coat to avoid the yellowing of nails.
