David Mura is a highly regarded novelist, poet, and performance artist, one who intimately manages to cast a soft glow over the dark areas of Japanese American history. Through his poetry and prose, Mura has tackled complex themes with the tenacity of a samurai warrior. His works have ardently addressed the internment of Japanese Americans during World War II, as well as the seemingly frail connections Japanese Americans still experience today revolving around cultural uncertainty. And to his credit as a skilled writer, Mura is humbly a past recipient of the “Lila Wallace-Reader’s Digest Writers’ Award” and the “Discovery/The Nation Award”.

Famous Suicides of the Japanese Empire was recently published this September by Coffee House Press. This latest piece focuses on the soul-searching escapades of Ben Ohara, an inquisitive historian laden with harsh memories from his childhood. Yet, while digging through many of his daunting childhood recollections, Ohara discovers some undeniable truths his loved ones endured during the internment of World War II. He learns of their courage and their respect for culture, both of which eventually lead to Ohara’s heroic and sought-after redemption.
