According to TripAdvisor’s annual Traveling with Pets Survey, 61 percent of respondents who own pets have traveled with their furry friend, and 17 percent said the number one reason they travel with their pet(s) is to enjoy spending vacation time with them. In order to maximize that enjoyment, a few tips for keeping four-legged family members safe, stylish and happy during shared summer travels:

Keep tabs with a GPS collar
Five million pets are reported missing each year, and many of these instances occur on the road. Unfamiliar places, new people, a different environment: pets can easily get lost when traveling. To help keep pets safer, Lovemypets created the GPS Pet Safety Collar. A small, battery-powered GPS device mounted on a light reflecting, glow-in-the-dark collar allows pet owners to immediately pinpoint their pet’s position on an on-line map and even track the direction in which their pet is moving. Not traveling with a laptop? No problem. Simply call the Lovemypets information line, quote your login and password and a consultant will track your pet for you.

Shelter smaller pets in an appropriate carrier
Anyone who travels frequently knows a pet carrier is essential to shelter and protect a pint-sized pet while restraining them from scurrying around dangerous airports and city streets. Unfortunately, pet carrier designs often leave much to be desired. Lucky for stylish New Yorkers, Kakadu Pet, a popular Australian pet accessory line, is coming to the United States, and they’re bringing their chic pet travel bags with them. Choose from four designs with names as fashionable as the bags themselves: Milan, New York, Paris and St. Germain. In addition to travel bags, Kakadu also makes some pretty classy leads and harnesses for the pet on the go.

Let Fido fly the pet-friendly skies
If your furry bundle of joy is a little too large to accompany you on the airplane, and you just can’t bear to make him ride in the cargo hold, Pet Airways may be the perfect solution for you. The brand new all pet airline just started flying last week, and currently serves several airports in the New York area, along with the Washington DC/Baltimore area, Chicago, Denver and Los Angeles. Ticket prices start at $149 each way, and pets fly in style in the air-conditioned main cabin of a turbo-prop aircraft, constantly monitored by a trained pet attendant. Rumor has it snacks get handed out every 15 minutes or so. Sounds like Pet Airways customers have it better than most frequent flyers of the two-legged variety.
