For those of you seeking a handmade, hand-knitted , handcrafted Christmas this year and want something a little different to decorate your tree with, why not make it a "knitting" event.

One of the items featured in the 2009 Holiday Gifts  Issue from Interweave Knits is the Star Tree Topper designed by Tonya Wagner.  This topper was knitted in a lustrous silk  blend by Sheep Shop Yarn Sheep Number Three and with the added beading, this  topper has just enough  "sparkle" that makes it a wonderful replacement to the standard tree toppers you buy off the shelf.   Of course no tree is complete unless you include a  hand-knitted skirt and the  Sunburst Throw  by Daniel Yuhas is just the what you need.  This throw was created by working in the round from the center out and leaving a hole at the center to go around a tree.  The finished project measures 36" in diameter.  You can knit this beautiful throw to add a burst of color under your tree, or finish as a lap blanket to keep someone you love warm and toasty on those cold winter nights. The topper has been chosen, as well as the skirt.  Now it's time for  ornaments,  but what to knit?   How about a hand-knitted Christmas Tree Ornament ?  This fun project by Jill Koemer is snap to knit and can be dressed up by using ties in gold or silver ribbon.   For a few hand-knitted stockings, take a look at  Little Cotton Rabbits pattern.   This little stocking is super fast to knit and looks cute a button when completed.  While you're printing off your stocking pattern, take a quick look at Little Cotton Rabbits  Knitted Holly .  What a nifty little item to add in place of ribbon on your Christmas gifts!    Of course you must have a few poinsettias sprinkled with care and Knitting Daily has just the right pattern to get you on your way. This tiny poinettia ornament can be knitted up in a flash and paired with your knitted holly, would make an excellent addition to your tree.   (Photos: Courtesy of Little Cotton Rabbits and All About You)

Do make sure to visit  Lion Brand Yarn  as they offer several holiday ornaments to knit and to crochet, including holiday ball ornaments knitted in a simple Fair Isle pattern or striped pattern.   As mentioned in an earlier article, Knit Picks currently offers a Tidings of Joy Holiday Ornament Kit .  This kit includes yarn and pattern instructions to complete all 20 hand-knitted oraments to adorn your tree or even better, to use along with gift tags on  your Christmas gifts.

Amy Gaines has done it again!  Amy has just  introduced her newest pattern collection a  Knit Christmas Ornament Pattern Set  .  In this set, you will find  instructions to knit a Santa, Pepperments, Snowman, Acorn, Tree, Birdhouse, Mushroom and even a Cupcake!  This adorable set would be perfect  for  mininature trees, standard trees or even tied along with gift tags on presents. Voilà ,  you now have the perfect hand-knitted collection for your tree.  All of these patterns are very simple to knit  and can be another great way to use up left over yarn that might be accumulating in your basket.

There's so much more that can be offered, but this will get you on your way to having a wonderful hand- knitted  holiday.  For more creative holiday ideas make sure to visit Knitting Pattern Central  or Ravelry
