Donkey Kong 1st screen: see original here

The persistent failure that is Steve Wiebe didn’t disappoint when he botched yesterday’s Donkey Kong record attempt. The endeavor to best Billy Mitchell’s 1,050,200 points was held at E3 and included a ridiculous prize of $10,001 comprised entirely of quarters. Like another DK record attempt wasn’t bad enough, if he wins he gets to lug around like 500 pounds of coins. Idiots.

There is a little contention surrounding the validity of the attempt however. The run was plagued by some suspicious occurrences and even now little information can be found about the official results. Some are blaming a power outage and unusual final screen for Wiebe’s shortcomings rather than siding with the logical conclusion of habitual defeat. I personally wouldn’t go so far as to dismiss the obvious, but anything is possible… I guess.

For the record, I like Donkey Kong as much as the next guy; actually, far more than the next guy, I just don’t like Mitchell or Wiebe. I respect a life spent in pursuit of a dream, but the Donkey Kong record is only important to preoccupied math teachers and bar-b-que sauce salesmen. As for the stupid “rivalry” between Mitchell and Wiebe, you’ve got to be kidding. If anyone out there is not aware of the King of Kong film you’ve certainly got luck on you’re side. Someone actually thought that the pathetic slap and tickle fight between these two would make for good cinema… they were wrong.

Wiebe did jump three barrels at once during a run, which isn’t cool enough to make the whole spectacle worth caring about, but it is still pretty cool.

Here’s to playing and not caring.

Now is the future of classic games
