Wii overtakes PS3 in Japanese hardware sales for 2009

In late April, the Playstation 3 overtook the Nintendo Wii as the top selling home console in the Japanese market for 2009. That achievement didn’t last long, however, as the Nintendo Wii has overtook the Playstation 3 for hardware sales in Japan for 2009, according to the latest Media Create numbers. 

So far, the Nintendo Wii has sold 562,551 units in 2009. Thanks to last week’s sales, it is now ahead of the Playstation 3’s total, which is at 558,259 units sold for the year in Japan.

The takeover could be attributed to the lack of high profile Playstation 3 releases after the release of the Final Fantasy XIII demo. The Nintendo Wii held steady at the same period although the numbers are still a big drop from last year.

Here is the week by week breakdown after Playstation 3 overtook the Nintendo Wii on the week ending on April 19th:
