Thanksgiving weekend means spending time with family and friends...and doing so away from your home. Internet access is a scarcity when dealing with my family so I will be posting a preview for this weekend's game today. Really, I didn't have to do any work at all as Washington Redskins Examiner Mark Newgent and I have decided to swap questions and answers for the second time this year.
For those of you who don't remember, the New York Giants defeated the Washington Redskins 16-7 in week one of the 2008 NFL regular season. What's going to happen this Sunday? Here's what Mark has to say about the game and the Redskins in general.
1. Looking back at the St. Louis and week 11 Dallas games, are you disappointed with Washington's 7-4 record?
I am definitely disappointed that they lost to the Rams. In that respect, they should be 8-3. Losing to the Cowboys is always disheartening but its a division game and its tough to beat any division opponent twice. I expected that the Redskins wouldn't take two from Dallas. Overall though, I am not disappointed by a 7-4 mark given they began the season with a rookie head coach and new offense. At the beginning I predicted 7-9 at worst, or 9-7 at best. They have exceeded my expectations. Now, I think there is a possibility that they can go 10-6, but I will concede that that might not be enough to get into the playoffs.
2. How will Washington protect Jason Campbell from being decimated by New York's pass rush?
Simply put the offensive line needs to just play better. The have had rough outings to put it mildly against the league's elite defenses. A lot of their problems stem from age and nagging injuries. Running the ball effectively would help as well.
3. Will Chris Cooley have a better game against the Giants than he did in week 1?
That depends on where and when he gets thrown to. I think he can definitely have a better game, but they need to remember to use him in the red zone or try to get him open down the middle of the field where he can outrun a linebacker.
4. Right now, who is the MVP of the Redskins? Who will be at season's end?
Clinton Portis and Clinton Portis.
5. I don't believe the Giants are finishing the season 15-1. Will the Redskins give the Giants their second loss of the season?
The well worn cliche "any given Sunday" is a cliche for a reason. Sean Taylor's number will go up on the Ring of Honor Sunday, and the emotions of that could carry over onto the field and ignite a Redskins upset of the Giants leading to another stretch run to the playoffs like 2005 and 2007. I would like to see it, but that would require a lot of serendipity.
Big thanks goes out to Mark once again for extending the offer to swap articles. Mark actually has Internet over the rest of this week so you can look for his piece as we get closer to game day. I am refusing to give my prediction for Sunday just yet as I'm holding onto hope that I will be able to break away to a cafe (if Erie has cafes) sometime this weekend and give my thoughts on the upcoming New York victory.
Until next time, have a happy and safe Thanksgiving weekend. Enjoy the football.
