Can dogs predict an earthquake? This question is a common one at the center of many debates. Dog lovers everywhere would probably say “yes!” However, most seismologists would disagree. Who’s right? Who’s wrong? Let’s review the evidence.

Several pet owners have reported that their dogs do unusual things right before an earthquake. One such owner is journalist Cal Orey. She claims that her dog Brittany gets clingy and restless right before an earthquake. It is her proof that one is about to hit. Of course, Orey has no scientific data to prove her claims are true. However, there are a few theories for her to rely on. They are as follows:

* Dogs have a six sense.  A six sense is an intuition that alerts them to danger. Because earthquakes are destructive, dogs can feel them right before they strike an area.

* Dogs can sense ultra-sonic waves. These kinds of waves usually break right before an earthquake. Since dogs can feel them coming before anyone walking on two legs, they react wildly.

* Dogs can feel magnetic shifts in the earth. Some people believe that they are super sensitive to them. As a result, they feel the rumblings of an earthquake deep in the earth way before any human does.

Do you think these theories make sense? If so, you are not alone - that is - in the real world. However, in the scientific stratosphere, you are a sole stranger walking the earth. No studies have emerged yet proving any of these theories. Yet, this fact really doesn’t discount their truth.

For a while now, science has taken its time to prove certain long held ideas of man. A good example of this is the benefit of faith in regards to health. Many people had stories of miraculous healing, but science didn’t except them as fact. However, now, there is a synergy of the two. Most good doctors would tell even an atheist to draw on his person faith in the face of a deadly illness because of its medicinal benefits. I believe the same thing holds true in regards to dogs being able to predict earthquakes.

People all over the world have claimed that their animals have been able to predict earthquakes. This is especially true of people living on farms. So, can dogs predict earthquakes? Yes, they can. Keep this in mind the next time your dog starts acting strange for no reason. Don’t ignore his unusual behavior. Instead, bolt down your valuables and take cover. Your dog could be reacting to an event that just might shake up your world.
