The jury is out on whether year-round schooling is a good thing or not. However, it is becoming a popular trend. Many homeschoolers don't take much of a summer break, college students take classes year-round and more and more schools are heading in the direction of year-round schooling. To make it work for public school students however, entire families and communities will have to adjust.
While year round-school isn't a new concept, it is new to Herzl Elementary school in Chicago. In an effort to bring struggling students up to standards, the school is shortening summer breaks and rearranging the school year in the hopes that shorter breaks means more academic retention.
Other reasons this school is becoming year-round is to better care for its students, many of whom have parents on drugs or in jails.
Chicago plans to have 91 more schools adopt year-round education in the coming school year.
There are many who are unhappy about the changes. Parents fear students will burn out from not having decent breaks. Others aren't happy with the school to begin with and fear that a bad situation will only become worse.
