Last night in President Obama's adress to Congress, he reiterated what most intelligent people have known for years.  A high school education is not enough.  The president recommends at least 1 year of higher education or career training beyond high school in order to be competitive in a Global economy.

Unfortunately, many students don't even receive a high school diploma.

"We have one of the highest high-school dropout rates of any industrialized nation, and half of the students who begin college never finish," Obama said. "This is a prescription for economic decline, because we know the countries that out-teach us today will out-compete us tomorrow."

The statistics speak for themselves.  There is a larger percentage of Koreans in College than Americans, and Canada and Japan outrank us in students have an associates degree or higher.  The president ads that :

Dropping out of high school is “not just quitting on yourself, it’s quitting on your country -- and this country needs the talents of every American.

This is why the economic stimulus bill  included $2,500 credit for higher education and makes books and computer eligible for write-offs.
