Many people confuse the terms unschooling and homeschooling and think that they are interchangeable. They are not…. Sort of. Unschooling is a form of homeschooling, meaning all unschoolers are homeschoolers, but all homeschoolers are not unschoolers.
There are several types of homeschoolers from classical, to relaxed to unschooling. Classical homeschooling is the most stringent form of homeschooling, relaxed falls somewhere in the middle, and unschooling is probably the most radical approach to homeschooling available. It allows families to follow the interests of the child when designing lessons and curriculums instead of parents dictating what a child will learn.
Unschooling is not for the faint of heart. To unschool, you need to have faith in a child’s enthusiasm for learning and trust that they will eventually learn everything, or at least most things that they need to learn fueled by nothing more than their own curiosity. You also need to be detailed enough to itemize and record what your child has learned to help them put together a portfolio to use for college admissions. Maybe it takes a special type of crazy to pull off such a feat. But crazy or sane, many children are homeschooled each year and go on to have great success in life.
