Welcome to the Disease Prevention book club.
Eat for Health is Dr. Joel Fuhrman's nutritional prescription for superior health. In Phase Two of his book (chapter 8), Dr. Fuhrman offers practical advice for adding good healthy food to your diet.
According to Dr. Fuhrman, eating vegetables and fruit should be "the foundation of your diet." Using his Exercises With Food, you can make the transition to a more healthful way of eating more smoothly.
"Exercise eating without taste expectations" is one Exercise With Food that "stretches the palate" and is described on pages 97 and 98. Eating new foods without expecting to like them right away is necessary to adapt the taste for and the enjoyment of healthful food. Dr. Fuhrman writes, "When first trying something new, we may mistakenly think that we don't like it, when in fact, we just need more time to get used to it."
While you're at the market, pick up an unfamiliar vegetable or fruit. Scour the your cookbooks and the internet for information about that food, i.e. how it is grown, its nutritive value, how to prepare it for cooking, and some new recipes. If you don't care for it on the first try, give it another chance and then another. You may need to prepare it a different way. As you eat more good healthy food, you are likely to prefer it and the shun the food that has questionable value for good health.
