A study out last week proved what I have believed all along: Taking multivitamins does not prevent heart disease or cancer, not does it add years to your life -- at least for women.
This study, published February 9 in the Archives of Internal Medicine, found that in more than 160,000 post menopausal women there was no significant difference in the incidence of heart disease or cancer or in the mortality rate between those who took multivitamins and those who did not.
"The evidence is accumulating that these are pills of little value," the study's lead researcher -- Dr. Marian L. Neuhouser -- said in a recent interview, referring to recent neutral results from trials with multivitamins in men—the US-based SELECT trial and the Physician's Health Study 2—that were not available when her manuscript was submitted.
Neuhouser goes on to say, "There may be other preventive practices that are better than taking a vitamin supplement, and their money is probably better spent on buying fruit and vegetables or increasing physical activity."
People who invest time and money in a practice of taking vitamin and mineral pills, such as a multivitamin, vitamin E, and vitamin C, are probably better off investing the time and money in buying and preparing foods that are healthful, ones that naturally contain these nutrients. You see, the naturally occurring nutrients work in combination with the phytochemicals and antioxidants in the food to create a symphony of disease prevention.
Americans try to micromanage their diets -- a practice that is doomed. Isolating nutrients from a diet that is void of good nutrition is futile. The secret is in the diet. Vegetables, fruits, beans, and whole grains supply a wonderful blanket of nutrients for living disease-free.
