Researchers claim that housewives have more knee trouble than women who work outside the home. This connection was uncovered by a recent study that set out to evaluate the association between occupations, sports, life-long daily activities, and knee osteoarthritis.
Apparently, the activities associated with house cleaning and childcare, i.e. bending, kneeling, squatting, twisting, have a negative impact on the knee joint. For example, when the knee is completely flexed, leaving less than a 90 degree angle between the lower leg and the upper leg, the knee is under much tension, and this position can compromise the integrity of the knee's connective tissues.
Interestingly, researchers associated with the study found that activities such as carrying loads, climbing stairs, prolonged standing, sitting on the floor, and walking up/downhill were not risks for knee osteoarthritis.
Osteoarthritis is an inflammatory condition, a swelling of the joints. To calm the pain associated with osteoartritis, an anti-inflammatory diet is recommended. Avoid taking expensive drugs that only mask the symptoms. The functional approach to healing arthritis begins with the cause, not the symptoms.
