Has there ever been a better photo for a strange news page? (AP)

As fans of the King of Pop settle in to celebrate the six-month anniversary of his death… wait… what… it only feels that long?

Anyway, while media watches breathlessly in hopes that Jermaine was indeed able to use a sick day and vacate his spot in the first window at Carl Jr.’s, there actually were relevant news stories taking place. Some outside of this country, even.

Sha mon!
The Obama Administration, not content with the financial burden already placed squarely on the backs of taxpayers, urged the senate to rush through the consumer/small business killing bill, otherwise know as cap-and-trade. The folks in the House of Reprehensibles…. er, uh, Representatives passed the biggest tax in American history two weeks ago.

Energy Secretary Steven Chu, with a death-grip on his dog-eared copy of “Inconvenient Truth,” did his best to shun the old fear-mongering tactics by testifying about the loss of half the polar ice caps, rising sea levels and a ten-degree-increase in the earth’s temperature.

Even though there hasn’t been any global warming for the last decade.

Mamasaymmasamamacoosa…
The Phillipines is suffering from a wave of orchestrated bombings that began on Sunday and to date have killed at least 10 and wounded dozens.

The first bombing took place on Sunday in front of a Catholic church in Cotabato City. The death toll in that attack has risen to six.

On Monday, four explosives were used in the bombing of the Transco tower in Barangay. Only two of the explosives went off but the tower was toppled. The National Grid Corp. (NGC) of the Philippines said similar bombs were found - but did not explode - in another tower owned by the company.

On Tuesday three more bomb attacks occurred in parts of Mindanao including a car bomb that wounded nine people, three of them were soldiers.

Woo-hoo!…
Three hospital associations struck a deal with the Obama White House this week, pledging $155 billion over ten years toward the cost of insuring the 47 million Americans without health coverage.

According to the Washington Post, this agreement is the latest in a series of side deals that aim to reduce the cost of Obama’s revamping of the health-care system and to neutralize industries that have historically opposed such reforms.

In layman’s terms: those who squashed Hillary care are being picked off like the Tattaglias.

But the chil’ is not my son…
On Monday the National Institute of Health issued the guidelines on stem cell usage in government funded research. In March, President Obama removed some of the controls on stem cells and asked the NIH to determine a “code of ethics” in regard to their use.

As a result, the NIH has decided embryos used for stem cell research may only be those that fertility clinics intend to discard. Additionally, The ethical requirements also stipulate couples that donate their embryos for research must be told what might be done with them.

I’ll be there… with a raised terror alert...
WTOP.com is reporting that German authorities have discovered that various groups of terrorists have been dispatched from training camps in Pakistan.

Apparently, U.S. officials warned the Germans back in April that terrorist attacks could take place. Intelligence suggests al-Qaida operatives are planning to plant multiple explosive devices in several locations and detonate them either in a simultaneous or sequential fashion.

The strategy is said to mirror the attacks in Madrid in 2004. A number of sources cited Turkish airlines flying from Istanbul to the U.S., UK and Israel as a potential target.

American cities served by Turkish Airlines are New York, Philadelphia, Baltimore, Cincinnati, Charlotte, Tampa and Chicago.

It’s a Thriller, just no longer the up-the-leg variety
Perhaps the week’s most shocking news thus far is the discovery of someone (anyone) affiliated with The Washington Post who has come to the realization the Teleprompter Messiah can’t actually walk on water.

Writer Dan Balz even went so far as to point out a drop in presidential approval numbers among not only republicans (gasp!) but also independents. A Quinnipiac poll of Ohio voters showed that Obama’s approval rating had fallen from 62% to 49%.

Now back to regularly scheduled coverage of all things Michael. Next time we’ll avoid stories about Sarah Palin.
