See the pretty cans? Source

Sometimes finding a diet soft drink you like and feel good about consuming is tough. I’ve tried various diet sodas and found most of them lacking. Those that I do like tend to leave me wondering if I should be concerned about the artificial sweeteners.  What to do?

This is a gap the makers of Zevia have endeavored to fill. Their line of carbonated beverages boasts  “Zero Artificial Ingredients, Zero Calories”. With a rating of zero on the glycemic index, due to being supplemented with Stevia, it’s easy to see this is a nutritional bargain for anyone with insulin issues.  It contains none of that horrid high fructose corn syrup and has zero carbs.  With flavors like Natural Cola, Natural Ginger Root Beer, Natural Twist and Natural Orange, you get a wide range to tickle the taste buds.  Sounds fantastic, right? I thought so too.

But there’s more! (Thank you, infomercials, for coining that phrase!) Not only is this a great product, but they are also certified Kosher and have partnered with the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation in the hopes of finding a cure. That’s a goal worthy of our support!

So now the big question: How does it taste?

To be honest, my first impression wasn’t so great. It seemed very carbonated and not very sweet. To be fair I had others in my family try it as well. As I feared, I found that my taste buds are used to what my husband refers to as my “extremely sweet” Diet Rite drinks. (You’d think I guzzle Karo syrup, the way he talks.) Everyone else in the family said the Zevia they tried was pretty good.  So I gave the drinks another chance and am starting to get used to the differences.  My favorite at this point is the Natural Twist. I’m happy to report it rivals any diet lemon-lime drink I’ve tried.  I was also excited to find that Zevia is available in one of my local markets, so now I can stock up for the winter. (Hey… squirrels do it, why not me? I’m squirrel-ish.)

To learn more about the product, where to purchase, and the company itself, be sure to check them out at Zevia’s website.
