As you know by now, the democratic uprising in Iran known as the Green Movement has turned into violent crackdown of the protesters and unfortunate bloodshed in the streets of Tehran. To keep up hope and express their concern for the harsh treatment of their compatriots by the Islamic regime of Iran, Iranian ex-pats have staged numerous rallies all over the world during the last two weeks. From Genova to Tokyo, London to San Francisco, Stockholm to New York, Iranians and their friends have gathered in green and black to act as the voice of Iranians inside Iran who have been disconnected from the outside world. There have been hunger strikes in Koln, rallies and candlelight vigils in Kabul, Palo Alto, Dubai, Seattle, Paris, Calgary, Sydney, Arlington, Brussels, Berkeley, and the most recent development, a break-in into the Islamic Republic’s embassy in Stockholm.

World Unites for Freedom in Iran

At these times of distress and pain filled with overwhelmingly heartbreaking news, many non-Iranians have shown their support and condolences to Iranian-American communities either by signing petitions, attending rallies/candlelight vigils or by sharing their message of solidarity through electronic means. A couple of such messages of hope and solidarity circulating the internet are those by the legendary folk singer and activist Joan Baez and the multi-platinum Haitian musician, actor and producer Wyclef Jean.

 Joan Baez "We Shall Overcome"

Wyclef Jean: "This is a special performance for all my people in Iran."

Two candlelight vigils are scheduled for tonight in the Bay Area. Please do consider joining your Iranian friends at one of these gatherings as your presence will definitely be a remedy to heal their broken hearts and shattered dreams.
