Next week is National Singles Week.
Unmarried households are now the majority in America. Here in LA County, 16.3% of households are run by single parents (12.1% are moms, 4.2% are dads).
Bella DePaulo's new book, Single With Attitude, is this month's AtMP's book club pick, and the author herself will lead the email discussions. Having trouble finding time to read? Now that the kids are in school, read while they're doing their homework!
DePaulo's earlier book, Singled Out, explored some of the myths and stereotypes of single parents.
For instance, in one study, the happiness level of those who are married did not drastically increase (save a "honeymoon peak") compared to those same people before the marriage (p 36).
Single parents have been told for years that our kids are at a higher risk for drugs. The actual study found that the percentage of kids with drug problems in single mom households was only 1.2% higher than households with both mother and father. And those kids with just mom? Only 5.7% have a substance abuse problem (p 176). Meaning, of course, that almost 95% of kids in single mother households do not have a substance abuse problem.
The virtual book club will start discussions on September 30, so spend some time celebrating National Singles Week curled up with a good book.
