Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus opened their 139th edition entitled "Zing Zang Zoom" at the Staples Center on Wednesday evening.
Led by 'Zingmaster' Alex Ramon, the circus presents magical illusions, master acrobat performers, and awe-inspiring animals in a bright show with not too many dark spots.
Ramon has not just the presence of a great ringmaster; he also performs his own illusions, sometimes using the help of selected audience members. The weakest moments, however, come when Ramon encounters his nemesis, Mr. Gravity (Alan Digweed). Still, Ramon keeps the show moving along at a nice pace.
Assisting Ramon is Clara Ruiz as Levitytia, who takes on the role of singer/assistant ringmaster, and also performs her own upside-down circus act, which may defeat gravity, but drags on minutes too long.
The animals - all of them - were a crowd favorite. Zebras, horses, dogs, tigers, and elephants all performed beautifully. Acrobats from around the world performed breath-taking tasks to the delight of everyone as well.
The two-hour show (with one intermission) flew by (sometimes literally) with act after act leaving the audience asking, "how do they do that?"
