The Houston Comets, which was one of the original franchises in the Women's Professional Basketball Association (WNBA), will be suspending operations after the league couldn’t secure a buyer. The Comets won the league's first 4 championships from 1997 – 2000 under former head coach Van Chancellor. Houston Rockets owner Leslie Alexander, who was the original owner of the franchise, sold the team to businessman Hilton Koch in January of 2007. The league took over the franchise in August of 2008 after Koch was looking to sell it. The league decided to disband the team after it couldn’t find new owners in time for the start of the 2009 season. The Comet’s roster will be distributed in the dispersal draft that will be held on December 8th in which the Atlanta Dream will have the first pick.
