Swine flu: Is the media overreacting?

A swine flu epidemic was declared in 1976 when several dozen soldiers in New Jersey contracted the disease. National health emergencies were declared and the media kicked into high gear warning everyone to take precautions against the deadly swine flu virus.
Several articles have been recently published in the major media about the 1976 swine flu scare and what can be learned from it. An article in Time magazine is particularly revealing. Here are some key excerpts:
"In February 1976, an outbreak of swine flu struck Fort Dix Army base in New Jersey, killing a 19-year-old private and infecting hundreds of soldiers. Concerned that the U.S. was on the verge of a devastating epidemic, President Gerald Ford ordered a nationwide vaccination program at a cost of $135 million (some $500 million in today's money). Within weeks, reports surfaced of people developing Guillain-Barré syndrome, a paralyzing nerve disease that can be caused by the vaccine. By April, more than 30 people had died of the condition. Facing protests, federal officials abruptly canceled the program on Dec. 16. The epidemic failed to materialize."
Only one person died from the swine flu itself in this 1976 "epidemic," yet more than 30 died of the tainted flu vaccine promoted by the U.S. government. Two short commercials made in 1976 show the bizarre scare tactics used which were far out of proportion to the reality. Watch both of them here.
Time and again the media and government act out of proportion to the real threat. Remember all of the fear being propagated about the avian flu a few years ago, and the imminent danger of weapons of mass destruction that lead to the Iraq war?
