Ordinary Susan Boyle lives alone with her cat Pebbles in one of Scotland's poorest regions. Yet almost overnight she has transformed into the hottest new Internet sensation with her stunning performance on the U.K.'s top entertainment show Britain's Got Talent. The show's often-harsh judges were shocked and delighted with how this homey, yet spunky woman won the hearts of an initially skeptical audience and became the extraordinary ordinary woman.
"I did this for my late mother," the unemployed Boyle told The Associated Press at her home in a scruffy Scottish village Thursday. "I wanted to show her I could do something with my life." Susan loyally cared for her widowed mother for years before she died. The youngest of nine children of a devout Roman Catholic family, Susan grew up in one of Scotland's most deprived areas, a district blighted by unemployment, crime and social problems.
Yet in less than a week, Susan Boyle has become not only the buzz of her town, she's become the talk of her new Internet fans around the world. Her unforgettable performance has already drawn 20 million views on YouTube and an invite to sing on Oprah, CBS, and other major networks, not to mention the 11 million who watched her on the tube Saturday in Britain.
