US Intelligence Examiner Fred Burks
Introducing former presidential interpreter Fred Burks

Having worked as a language interpreter in top secret meetings at the highest levels of government, I have had the privilege of seeing things that few ever see. As a participant in a global network of courageous individuals dedicated to the transformation of our world, I have also received an abundance of both deep inside information and inspiring material that we can use to build a brighter future together.

Knowing of both the deeper aspects of politics of which few are aware and of the powerful transformation movements sweeping across our planet, I find it most important to balance my interest in deep cover-ups with exploring and joining in on some of the many exciting movements taking place which invite more love, joy, and deep connection with ourselves, our communities, and our planet and universe. I am incredibly optimistic that we can and will build a brighter future together.

As examiner.com's US Intelligence Examiner, I will be giving you the inside scoop on highly revealing news which goes largely unreported, yet comes from reliable, verifiable sources. I'll also give analysis of deep political undercurrents to help you read between the lines, and provide concrete ideas on actions you can take to make a difference in our world. Equally important, I will occasionally inform you of wonderful and inspiring stories and movements which are helping to transform our world in a rich variety of ways.

Before resigning from the U.S. Department of State in 2004 (see Washington Post article on my resignation), I served for 18 years as an Indonesian language interpreter for top officials of the U.S. and other countries, including such notable figures as G.W. Bush, Bill Clinton, Al Gore, and Dick Cheney. I participated in many secret meetings where only the key players and their interpreters were allowed.

To my amazement, I was not required to sign any secrecy agreements while working with the government, even though I was sometimes dealing with highly sensitive information. This is but one example from my personal experience of how our government sometimes fails to use caution and common sense.

Yet when the State Department finally did require a secrecy agreement, it went to the other extreme, stating that interpreters “shall not communicate to any person or organization any information known to them by reason of their performance of services that has not been made public,” unless written approval was obtained from our superiors. And this applied for the rest of our lives.

This meant that I couldn't even tell my friends and family in what city and hotel I was staying on assignment, as our itinerary was rarely made public. It meant that if someone told me a good joke, I could never tell it to anyone unless it somehow was made public. It meant that if I had heart-warming, inspiring experiences with my visitors (which I had many), I would not be able to share them without written approval from my superiors.

I certainly understand the need for some secrecy, but this level of secrecy is ridiculous. If they had just been willing to insert "any information that could conceivably affect national security," I would have been more than happy to sign. As State Department officials were not willing to consider any alternatives, I resigned from my work there in 2004.

Yet as I never signed any secrecy agreement, I am free to talk about what I saw and experienced in my many fascinating years of service. Without revealing anything that might affect national security, I have written a six-page summary of some of the most fascinating and intriguing of my experiences interpreting for presidents and other top officials, which you can view here. You can also visit a website I started and currently manage which is dedicated to providing reliable, verifiable information on major cover-ups at www.WantToKnow.info.

My examiner.com articles focus on bringing you valuable information revealing key concepts and little-known news which every caring citizen would want to know. As most of you are well aware, the media these days is largely failing at its job of informing the public what's really going on in the world, especially if it exposes the deeper interests of the power elite.

Thanks to the reporting of public citizens like myself and others in examiner.com, this information is now available to you, and to all who care about our  world. I have no doubt that by working together, we can and will build a brighter future for ourselves, our children, and future generations. You can find a listing of all articles I've published on this website at this link. A box below most articles will also list concrete actions you can take to make a difference. Enjoy the reading and have a beautiful day.
