Colin Montgomery Links Golf Academy at Turnberry, Scotland

The 138th British Open is being played this week on one of the world's most spectacular, highly acclaimed and historic links courses, Turnberry in Scotland. A stellar attraction at Turnberry Resort, headquarters for the Open, is the Colin Montgomerie Links Golf Academy, which specializes in links-style play. When American golfers flock to Scotland, Ireland and England to play the historic links courses, from St. Andrews to Carnoustie, Ballybunnion to Turnberry, they face the harsh reality of traditional, European seaside links courses––characterized by high (usually wet and droopy) natural rough; an utter lack of trees, opening the fairways to stiff ocean breezes; and, steep-sided bunkers, including the devilish pot bunkers.

One of the best European golfers ever to compete on the international stage, and a veteran links player, the Scotsman, Colin Montgomerie, has established a multi-faceted teaching program at the Turnberry Academy. With state-of-the-art facilities, including driving and pitching ranges, the Cairngorms putting course, covered bays, simulators and swing analyzers, an audio visual theatre and the nine-hole Arran course dedicated to Academy students, the learning center offers programs ranging from “Monty's Fundamentals Review” to “The Full Monty”.

Colin Montgomery

More about Monty: in 1993, Montgomerie became Europe’s No. 1 pro golfer, a position he retained for an unprecedented run of 7 years. He has won more European Tour tournaments than any British golfer in history. He was a participant in titanic Ryder Cup competitions of the 1990s and 2000s and in 2005, he returned to the No. 1 spot in Europe for a record 8th time at the age of 42. Monty will be the European Ryder Cup captain for 2010. He has been awarded an OBE (Officer of the British Empire).

The glubhouse at Turnberry Resort in Scotland

The perfect introduction to links golf, the beautiful executive-length Arran course at Turnberry was designed to provide a teaching venue for the Golf Academy, and to accommodate beginners and youngsters, although undulating greens, tight tee shots, pot bunkers and ball-grabbing Scottish rough are to be reckoned with by low handicappers, too. Another layout, the 12-hole, par 3 pitch and putt course is available free to golf students and hotel guests.

Facilities at The Colin Montgomerie Links Golf Academy include:
• large indoor teaching area with retractable doors
• 16 covered driving and teaching bays
• audio-visual theatre with ASTAR computerised digital video, simulator & swing analyser
• open-air driving range with landscaped target area
• the Arran course, specially-designed for links practice
