Green Family Holiday Fair at the Peggy Notebaert Nature Museum, December 6
The Green Family Holiday Fair, to be held at the Peggy Notebaert Nature Museum on Sunday, December 6, 2009 from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., offers Chicago families a chance to enjoy a day of eco-friendly holiday shopping and educational programs about nature. Organized by the Peggy Notebaert Museum and the Green Parents Network, this family-friendly event will host at least 30 green companies and their earth-friendly products, with more vendors signing up each day.
Green Family Holiday Fair events
Family fun and educational opportunities at the Green Family Holiday Fair will be available throughout the day.
- From 10:00 to 5:00, families can visit the Green Product Gallery to examine the eco-friendly wares of vendors set up throughout the museum. Many exhibitors will be selling handmade goods from their Etsy stores. Others are members of the Green Parents Network.
- From 11:00 to 3:00 p.m., the Chicago Herpetological Society will be introducing parents and kids to snakes, lizards, turtles, and other reptiles.
- Also from 11:00 to 3:00, participants can learn how to make eco-friendly gifts and holiday ornaments.
- At 11:00 and again at noon, kids can meet and make a Critter Connection with some of the more than 40 creatures living in the lab at the museum.
- At 11:30, young children with their parents or guardians can enjoy Discovery Time, an educational guided play program using books, puppets, and games.
- At 1:00 p.m., visitors can witness the spectacle of a carnivorous soft shell turtle eating its lunch.
- At 2:00 p.m., visitors can watch an amazing release of newly emerged adult butterflies into their habitat.
At some time during the day, Melissa Graham, the head of Purple Asparagus and The Sustainable Cook, will teach families how to instill children with an understanding and appreciation of where the food on their table comes from.
