Stephen Colbert is headed for the Persian Gulf.
Following in the footsteps of fellow satirists (and ex-Daily Show correspondents) Rob Corddry and Rob Riggle, Stephen Colbert has been asked to entertain soldiers for a week with his special brand of political, Conservative character-based comedy.
In an interview with Stars and Stripes, Stephen said it was an honor to have even been asked to entertain U.S. troops.
“When you get asked to do this, I think you’d be a fool to say no,” Colbert said, noting that he has a flag from the 82nd Airborne Division given to him by a wounded soldier who attended his show.
While the enormity of the event is not lost on Mr. Colbert, he is being ever-humble about his "mission" while there:
“I’m not going there to change the world; I’m going to make jokes for the 140,000 people who are still there,” Colbert said.
This follows a monumental event for co-worker and best friend, Jon Stewart, host of The Daily Show, who throttled Jim Cramer in a recent interview. Stephen even joked that his trip is an attempt to out-do Mr. Stewart.
“It’s purely out of competition with his [Jim] Cramer interview,” Colbert said. “I actually had to go to a war zone just to do something more impressive than hammering CNBC.”
We fans (and fangirls) of Mr. Colbert's are incredibly proud of him, we also worry for him; he is, after all, in a war zone. Members of the Colbert Nation hope he comes back safe and sound - and soon. Though details of the trip (including specific date and time he intended to go) were left out of the press release, it is assumed that he went during this past week's break.
We hope to hear all about it (and perhaps even get pictures?) when Stephen returns Monday, March 30th with new episodes of The Colbert Report. If he, indeed, has not gone yet, we hope he has a safe trip.
