Wisin & Yandel

It was a vicious battle, and Britney Spears proved to be a brutal contender.

Not to mention that the heavy-hitter Beyoncé and red-hot newcomer Lady Gaga were also battling out in the same category as Wisin & Yandel — the only Puerto Rican artists who competed in Sunday's MTV Video Music Awards.

The reggaetón powerhouse duo lost out to the comeback golden girl in the Best Pop Music category at the awards show held atRadio City Music Hall in New York City.

The urban act's “Abusadora,” from its Machete Music album “La Revolución,” competed against Spears' “Womanizer,” from her album 'Circus,” and Beyoncé's “Single Ladies” (“I Am Sasha Fierce), Lady Gaga's “Poker Face” (“The Fame”) andCobra Starship's “Good Girls Gone Bad” (“Hot Mess”).

In an awards show that’s historically less remembered for its winners than for its antics, Sunday’s event lived up to its reputation.

And this time it was hip-hop superstar Kanye West who made sure that the spotlight shone on him  — once again. West cut off 19-year-old country pop star Taylor Swift amid heracceptance speech for Best Female Video, “You Belong With Me,” as he jumped onstage and said that Beyoncé should have won instead.

West said that he was happy for her “but Beyoncé had one of the best videos of all time.”

Taylor — who was presented with the award by Colombian rocker Shakira — stood stunned and speechless onstage while the audience booed West, a controversial rapper who’s no stranger to onstage tantrums.

In 2006, West staged a similar uninvited appearance at the MTV Europe Music Awards when he was scorned for his song “Touch the Sky.”  That year he said his video deserved to win because it “cost a million dollars and Pamela Anderson was in it.”

But the sour moment turned sweet later for Swift, who was given her chance in the spotlight later in the show thanks to the former Destiny Childdiva, who invited Swift onstage to let her finish her speech.

For his part, West has since apologized to Swift twice on his blog and on Monday's highly anticipated “The Jay Leno” debut show on NBC. “I feel like Ben Stillerin 'Meet the Parents' when he messed up everything andRobert De Niro asked him to leave . . . That was Taylor's moment and I had no right in any way to take it from her. I am truly sorry,” West said online.

Aside from West’s blowup, the spectacle delivered: Beyoncé swept the audience to its feet with her smash hit “Single Ladies,” Janet Jackson paid homage to her late brother Michael with a touching tribute that included a medley of “Thriller” and “Bad” and Pink flew and flipped from a trapeze during her performance of “Sober.” And the theatrical dance-pop singer Lady Gaga brought her performance of “Paparazzi” to a ‘bloody’ climax as fake blood dripped from her ribcage at one point and later it was all smeared on her face.

Other top acts included Alicia Keys and Jay-Z, both of whom joined their talents on the rapper’s “Empire State of Mind.”

Other A-list artists who shone onstage as presenters and entertainers were Madonna — who opened the show presenting theMichael Jackson tributeGreen Day and Nelly Furtado, to name a few.

Besides Swift, winners included Beyoncé for best video of the year, Green Day for best rock video, Lady Gaga for best new artist; T.I. featuring Rihanna for best male video and Eminem for best hip-hop video.
