Ok, here’s the deal. Maybe Latin music is not your thing. But if you tune in tonight and watch "Los Premios MTV Latino America 2008," you’ll have the chance to see Metallica’s sole television performance of 2008.
Yep, the legendary heavy metal group will take the stage tonight at the annual show to perform “The Day That Never Comes,” the first single from its newest album “Death Magnetic.”
The awards, to be held at the Auditorio Telmex in Guadalajara, Mexico, will air live starting at 9 p.m. (ET), only on MTV Tr3s.
“Metallica is the biggest hard rock band in the world — period," said José Tillan, senior vice president of content and music for MTV/VH1 Latin America. "We are honored to have them play at Premios this year. If you have never seen Metallica play, you are in for a heart-stopping experience. My ears are still ringing from the last time I saw them live a couple of years ago!"
But what if you’re not a headbanger either, right? Well, if catching Metallica’s act isn’t enough to get you to tune in, consider the list of other live performances slated for tonight by some of today’s hottest Latin names – Calle 13, Café Tacvba, Bostich + Fusible of Nortec Collective, Kudai, Katy Perry, Ximena Sariñana, Tokio Hotel, Belanova and Julieta Venegas.
But wait, there’s more. Did I mention the Colombian singer-songwriter Juanes, already a 12-time Latin Grammy winner, will give his performance debut of “Odio por amor,” the latest cut from his new album “La vida… Es un ratico.” Juanes is this year’s leading nominee, with seven nods recognizing his effort.
Still not convinced? But there’s more. Latin rockers are also in for a treat as the popular Argentinean band Los Fabulosos Cadillacs will also give a special live performance via satellite from Argentina. Cool, hu? Presenters include Gene Simmons, Flavor Flav, Tila Tequila and 30 Seconds to Mars, as well as Molotov, Alejandra Guzmán, Miranda and Kim Kardashian.
Oh, and for the Jonas Brothers’ cult following, the Jonases “When You Look Me in The Eyes” is up for best song of the year, competing against Venegas’ “El presente,” Juanes’ “Me enamora” and Tokio Hotel’s “Monsoon.” The Jonases are also up for an award in the best new international artist category.
All in all, I think tonight’s big winners will be Juanes, Café Tacvba, Belanova and Babasónicos. In the past year, they have really stirred up the Latin music world with their new efforts, hit singles and rollicking videos.
