Does Oklahoma have a rogue cop loose on the highways? In this bizarre incident, Oklahoma Highway Patrol officers interrupt a patient's trip to the hospital, threaten to arrest a paramedic, and choke the emergency worker as he tries to talk with them.
It happened near Prague. An ambulance was taking an elderly woman for emergency treatment when a trooper pulled the vehicle over. What happened next was caught live on a cellphone belonging to one of the patient's relatives.
Warning: this is graphic. You'll see the paramedic being harassed, threatened, pushed against the ambulance, and choked. Meanwhile, the terrified patient is inside.
Neither the cop who grabbed the paramedic's throat nor his partner ever ask about the patient inside, even though the paramedic pleads with them to let them get the woman to the hospital and handle things there. The ambulance's alleged offense? Apparently when the trooper came up behind the vehicle, the driver didn't see police car fast enough to suit the officer.
Paramedic Maurice White said the ambulance pulled as far over on the shoulder as it could once the driver saw the trooper riding his bumper. The trooper then pulled the ambulance over after it returned to the road.
Both a witness and the patient say that the paramedic reacted well. The incident is under investigation, and Fox 23 of Tulsa has filed a Freedom of Information request for the trooper's dash cam.
The witness says she was horrified by the incident. Her statement and the original incident video follow from Fox 23.
KRMG talk radio says that its viewers are reacting with fury over the trooper's actions. Fox 23 has witness and paramedic statements.
