Baby clothes are a must have. But there's no need for plain and boring. Jazz up the wardrobe of the tiny tot coming into your life with one of these unique, hip items in this gift guide that looks at clothes, shoes and such. Read part two and part three for more cool stuff!

So what do babies need to wear anyway?

  • I recommend having at least three long-sleeved shirts in case baby breaks his or her collar bone during delivery. This is one of those things you don't hear about much, but is very common. This happened with my second baby and I was totally unprepared and had to run to the store to try to find long sleeve shirts. Long sleeves are needed because little ones with broken collar bones simply need their shirt sleeve pinned for about two weeks. You just gently move their arm around when bathing or changing clothes and they heal on their own. The long sleeve pinned helps keep that arm immobile.
  • Babies also need lots of onesies. They are the most practical item because on a hot day they can be worn alone and on a cooler day they can be one of the layers. They don't ride up and are easy for parents to put on and take off.
  • I'd recommend having no more than 3 newborn size onesies and instead opting for size 0-3 months. That's because in most cases newborn won't last but a few weeks. Size 0-3 months will indeed take you closer to 2-3 months to grow out of.
  • Baby will also need a lightweight long sleeve sweater or jacket, a few pairs or pants or shorts, some jumpers and such items.
  • Also, when giving a gift, it might be nice to buy 3 or 4 separate sizes of cute outfits or onesies to take mom and dad through the year with your gift.
  • Skip the slippers. They're so cute, yes I know. They're hard to resist but most slippers keep falling off little ones and become unused hassles. Instead buy cute socks and/or baby shoes.

Here are some great ideas for clothing to buy. All have been personally tested by me and are here in this gift guide because they are high quality and wash well, not to mention super cute!

One Potato Blue has simple, classic layette items from shirts to jumpers. They are gentle and delicate looking but are made of nice thick, durable cotton. One Potato Blue's signature look for babies is plain white cotton items that are trimmed in different colored rickrack ribbon. Really cute. These are perfect for sending in the mail to friends far away too, as they come in great presentation with a cool cloth bag that you can use for carting around or storing baby items.

Hand Picked Pumpkin has a great customized gift option that allow you to design each clothing item. I made one of their cute reversible cotton hoodie jackets. The process itself is really fun, making it a great gift certificate item or something cool you can customize for your friend's baby too. You pick colors, patterns, even button colors for the inside and outside of the little jacket. I did a blue and brown combo with cowboy and horses retro accent print. It turned out really great and it's like getting a gift twice - once designing your item and a second time when it arrives in the mail.

Rich Soil has super cool zodiac onesies that make a great baby shower gift. Moms will love dressing their little ones in these organically grown in the USA onesies made with soy-based inks. They've got a modern, hip design to them to boot. I like how they're customized for baby without having his or her name on them. This makes them a great unisex gift for families who don't want to find out boy or girl until baby's born!

Organically Hatched has one of the most impressively presented gift sets out there. It's called "The Baby Bunch" and it looks like a beautiful bouquet of flowers. But those flowers are made of a set of organic baby clothes. It's so cute, you might not want to deflower the bunch. But do, because the set is nice for bay to wear! Get 10% off The Baby Bunch and anything else at OrganicallyHatched.com (with purchase of $20 or more) using coupon code "welcome."
