The cabbage soup diet claims that you can lose weight quickly by eating nothing but a vegetable soup that consists mainly of cabbage, onions and tomatoes combined with certain other foods. The foods allowed on the diet range from bananas to steak but only in prescribed amounts and all in addition to eating the "fat burning" soup. Despite some claims that the diet originated in a hospital, no doctor or hospital claims to have started the diet.

The diet first gained popularity in the 1980's  under several different names including "The Russian Peasant Diet" and "The General Motors Diet." Some versions of the diet claimed it was developed to help obese pateints lose weight quickly before heart surgery. Each variation of the diet has one common thread, the consumption of cabbage soup to ward off hunger.

Advocates of the diet state that you will lose between 10 and 17 pounds in just one week of dieting. Since the total number of calories consumed each day varies between 800 and 1,050 per day, the diet is essentially a modified fast. Any weight lost while on the plan will be gained back as soon as the dieter begins to eat normally. The diet is designed to last for seven days, and those who do not lose the desired amount of weight are advised to wait awhile before restarting the plan. There are several websites devoted to the plan, though none are linked to any individual or group. One website lists "pros and cons" of the plan along with testimonials written by dieters who have tried the plan. Negative comments about the diet include complaints about gas, intestinal discomfort and regained weight. Since the foods allowed on the plan are not widely available when dining out, the plan has to be carried out at home.

The Cabbage Soup Diet is definately not a "magic" fix. In an article on WebMD,  Connie Diekmann, MEd, RD, past President of the American Dietetic Association said,"It is a monotonous, short-term fix, severely lacking in nutrients, which will result in a weight loss that is primarily water and not the essential fat loss that is so important to improving health."  Despite the fact that the diet has been making the rounds on fax machines and email since the 1980's the Cabbage Soup Diet is, another fad diet. Like all fad diets, it sets the dieter up for failure when they can't stick to the plan or gain the lost weight back.
