Soon, football camp will be in full-swing and the speculation will begin on who Tedford will select to be his starters at nearly every position on the roster. Unfortunately, we can't just fast forward to that time.
Instead, we'll have to wait until things get busy again with football, and the other sports, in order to help make those Monday mornings go by just a little faster and give us something to look forward to during the long work week.
Due to technical difficulties, I'm holding on to a few articles that may be of interest. Instead of giving you something to chew on, I did a little work for you so you don't have to go searching all on your own for something to talk about around the water cooler (do they still have those anywhere?). Well, if it's not the water cooler, I'm sure it will be the line at Starbucks or the office coffee machine.
Either way, maybe this will help.
BASEBALL
Calbears.com has an interesting update on Golden Bears who are toiling in the minors. So if you're interested in finding out how Brett Jackson, Blake Smith, Matt Gorgen, and others are faring, it's a good read.
MEN'S HOOPS
Rivals.com is all over the Golden Bears today.
First up is a story called, "Montgomery hopes success settles in at Cal," is a good refresher of last season and a little tune up for those of you ready for the next one. Sandy Barbour probably put the program in perspective best with this quote:
It was really a shot in the arm when we hired Mike Montgomery. Hopes were high and expectations were elevated. But we thought it would take a little more time than Mike's initial season.
"Who do you want shooting a clutch 3-pointer?" Probably an easy answer for Bear Backers if you're only talking about Cal players. These guys from Rivals.com weren't. Those same Bear Backers will most likely be happy with at least one response.
FOOTBALL
Football is BIG in Texas, but Cal football? Seems that more than one Texan had the Golden Bears in their thoughts recently.
Chris Tavarez of The Daily Texan has Cal ranked No. 18 in their Daily Texan Top 25. Here's a little of what he wrote:
Last season the Golden Bears barely squeaked out a 24-17 win over Miami in the Emerald Bowl at AT&T Park — less than 15 miles from Cal’s Berkeley campus. The go-ahead touchdown for California came after Zack Follett sacked Miami quarterback Jacory Harris, forcing a fumble that Cal recovered and later converted into a game-winning touchdown.
That was the story of Cal football last year.
Richard Tijerina of the Austin American-Statesman disagrees with Tavarez on where the Golden Bears should be ranked. He has Cal ranked at No. 15 in their Preseason Top 25. Here's some of what he says about the Bears:
Southern Cal is the odds-on pick to win yet another Pac-10 championship, but Cal figures to be in the best spot to spoil that plan...
For those of you that thought Cal wouldn't raise the funds necessary for the stadium renovation, David Seawright at the Daily Cal reports otherwise. In the article, he reports the following:
In just over seven months, Pine and the rest of the athletic department focused on fundraising have raised 64-percent of their stated goal-six months ahead of the expected schedule.
