If you play City of Heroes/Villains then you've got to pay a monthly fee. That's standard for most MMOs. Even though there are free-to-play ones out there, pay-to-play games will always be around. I don't mind a monthly fee especially when it comes to my CoH/V subscription. That game offers more free content patches than I have hair on my head. Hyperbole aside, the game offers a lot that people don't have to buy (ie expansions) for free.
Perhaps this is why CoH/V and NCSoft can get away with additional booster packs at cost. Most MMOs offer services at a price like character transfers, name changes, and in some cases extra character "slots." CoH/V does the same, but it also offers booster packs at the NCSoft store.
These booster packs cost $9.99. That sounds steep but if you're enjoy CoH/V's robust customization options they're worth it. Since they are purely optional you're not really missing out if you don't buy them. Most packs offer an ability but these abilities are mainly fringe or slightly beneficial. They're not game changing abilities but they are nice to have. Emotes are also included which are always fun and entertaining. View the links to see which packs come with which emotes!
Currently, there are two booster packs proper. They are the Super Booster I: Cyborg and Super Booster II: Magic. The Cyborg Pack contains cyborg costume pieces and combat auras. These auras are beams of light from the eye(s) or a holographic HUD in front of your character's face. The ability included is called "Self Destruction" and allows you literally to kill yourself but hurt all enemies around you. The Magic Pack has a large collared cape, top hats, boleros, witch clothes, and more. The ability in this pack is "Mystic Fortune," an ability to buff other players by reading their fortune. Also, the Magic Pack includes a fancy new way to change into a different costume like a bolt of lightning striking you from the sky to change your outfit. Definitely watch the videos at the official site (linked above) to see examples of these costume changes.
I don't know anything for sure, but I'm hoping these booster packs continue in the direction they are going. Since one is a Cyborg pack and the other a Magic pack, I hope that there will be three more following the remaining three origins in the game. Those two cover the Technology and Magic origins respectively. (Maybe the Cyborg is the Science pack, I don't know I'm speculating!) I would absolutely buy a Science, Mutation, and Natural booster pack if those ever release. Like many other CoH/V players I have every character slot taken (I have not bought additional slots, however). These booster packs offer several more options for customization. I need that when I've got 20 characters all with the potential to have five different costumes. Call it a problem, but I spend a lot of time at the Tailor and these packs really enable that hobby!
Additionally, there is the Wedding Pack, the Good vs. Evil Pack, and the Mac Special Edition Pack. The Wedding Pack really offers more to female characters. I say that because there are a few more new pieces for women like Excess Plus and Hearts Plus. But like the name says it offers clothes found at weddings like tuxedos and bridal patterns. The Good vs. Evil pack has clothes offered in the Good vs. Evil Edition of the game. These patterns are called Justice and Sinister. The pack also has the "Jump Pack" power and the "Pocket D VIP Pass Teleport" power. The "Jump Pack" is a power that allows you to jump very high for a short amount of time (usable from level one). The "Pocket D VIP Pass Teleport" power lets you teleport to the nearest Pocket D with a very long cooldown. The Mac Special Edition Pack offers pieces included in the Mac version of the game. This pack contains Valkyrie wings, weapon (sword), and cape. The "Mission Teleporter" ability included allows you to teleport to your active mission with a very long cooldown. It's important to note that PC users can buy the Mac Special Edition Pack and apply the code for these items.
To buy these packs you need to visit the NCSoft store. After logging in you can simply buy a pack and immediately apply the code without even having to write that long alphanumeric code down. Of course, if all these bells and whistles really aren't your thing, no harm; no foul.
