Today has been a difficult day for Guiding Light fans who have just found themselves tuning back into this show for many reasons. Most of us have known for considerable time that this show, the longest running serial drama in the history of daytime has been struggling. Rumors of the show being canceled have been almost as prevalent as the number of headlines devoted to the antics of Brittney Spears. Every soaps journalist and blogger on the planet is encouraging fans to make a statement after speculation that this show is at the end of its rope.
None of us expected this news so soon, or at least I didn't. While the show may have a long way to go in terms of crawling out of the bottom of the ratings heap, nobody can deny the mark it's managed to make a mark on long term viewers who might have tuned out for a variety of reasons by compelling them to tune back in as well its ability of late lure new viewers in for several other reasons.
By bringing back long lost characters--whether briefly or for the long haul, this show has managed to connect lose threads and spark renewed interest. In addition, the magical story of the evolving relationship between Olivia and Natalia has managed to quietly engage an entire new audience. The light seemed to be quietly burning brighter for many fans.
Guiding Light has taken a chunk of criticism over the production model shooting outdoor scenes that resemble morning news meteorological news reports featuring shivering and wet actors who get inside only to be showcased in a few dull interior, warm inside sets. Improvements in the writing department have managed to make flat filming techniques a mute point. Sure, the wardrobe department could save money on purchasing winter jackets, gloves, scarfs and mittens for those cheesy outdoor scenes if they just took the cast back inside to a few cozy. warm interior sets with good lighting and a few splashes of paint that isn't of the garish green variety. None of the production details seem to matter however when the writing is good.
While the scribes at Guiding Light may not be hitting it out of the park for every single story arc playing out on this show, their scripts have vastly improved.. Why would this show be shopping around for other daytime shows to take its place at this point in time? It makes no sense.
It is a definite that fans will remain vocal about this development for as long as they have to. I will post a list of links for all of you later tonight on who to contact if you want to express your opinion. In the meantime, as a Keeper of the Light you need to take a piece of your favorite character in Springfield in order to make your voice heard. If you have a spec of Alan Spaulding's ruthlessness, a bit of Lizzie's corporate organizational skills, the passion of Otalia, the come back from the dead spirit of Phillip and the pure raw emotion of Buzz, you can make a difference and help save this show.
In addition, it would not hurt to save burnt our light bulbs to mail to the powers that be at Guiding Light with no return address of course with a simple message that reads how's this working for you?
