A Saturday without a sweet treat is like a day without sunshine, right?  Austin's had ample amounts of sunshine this summer and this weekend promises to reward us with many sweet treats, too.

Local food blogger Jennie Chen has organized the Cupcake Smackdown 1.0, benefitting the Wine & Food Foundation of Texas.  Blind taste tests of both professionally produced cupcakes and judging of amateur creations will take place at the Smackdown.  A panel of local chefs and foodies will judge vanilla, chocolate and a baker's choice cupcake from store front bakeries.  The public can join in the fun by voting for the crowd's favorite "People's Choice" award.  With the abundance of cupcakeries in town, the Smackdown features fierce yet friendly competition.

This kid and canine friendly event features cupcake eating contests for both humans and man's best friend.  Cupcakes for pooches are baked using wholesome ingredients for pets.  The contests are based on speed so the hungriest and fasted dog and person win barking, err, bragging rights as top dog of the cupcake contest.

The One2One Bar is hosting the Cupcake Smackdown.  Located at  121 E. 5th Street at Brazos, this downtown bar is dog friendly and a prime spot for happy hour and live music.  Musician Arielle Nicole will perform her country flavored Americana rock during the event.

For more info: Entry fees for the cupcake eating contests are $10 per person or pet.  Admission is free for the Cupcake Smackdown, which lasts from 4-7pm on Saturday, August 1st.  When not organizing Cupcake Smackdowns or creating unusual cupcake flavors, Jennie Chen also trains dogs, shows dogs and judges dog shows.
